FAQs
As local Port Stephens wedding photographers, we’ve photographed plenty of celebrations around Shoal Bay, and one of the things we love most about the area is how easy it is to combine a relaxed beach ceremony with beautiful accommodation, restaurants and reception venues just minutes away.
Here are some of the most common questions couples ask us about getting married at Shoal Bay Beach.
-
Yes, you can hold a wedding ceremony on Shoal Bay Beach with a permit from Port Stephens Council.
Beach weddings and ceremonies held in public reserves require a booking, and reservations are generally limited to two hours and the ceremony only. Receptions aren't permitted on Council-managed land.
This is actually one of the reasons Shoal Bay works so well for weddings. You can have the ceremony you’ve always imagined on the sand, then move to one of the excellent nearby venues for your reception, drinks and celebrations.
-
Shoal Bay is particularly well suited to a destination wedding because there are plenty of accommodation options within walking distance or a short drive of the beach.
Ramada Resort Shoal Bay
Ramada Resort by Wyndham Shoal Bay offers one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, making it a practical option for couples travelling with family or a wedding party.
Having everyone staying nearby can make the wedding weekend feel much more relaxed. There’s no need for long drives between accommodation, the beach and your celebrations.
Shoal Bay Country Club Penthouse
For something a little more luxurious, the Shoal Bay Country Club Penthouse is an impressive option for the wedding couple or wedding party.
The four-bedroom apartment has spectacular views across Shoal Bay Beach and towards Mount Tomaree, making it not only a beautiful place to stay but also a wonderful setting for getting-ready photographs.
Salt at Shoal Bay
Salt at Shoal Bay is another beautiful option for larger groups and families.
The property includes two self-contained levels and a separate cottage, giving everyone a little more privacy while still allowing the group to stay together.
The bright, open interiors and waterfront outlook also make it a lovely option for wedding photography, particularly if you're planning photographs while getting ready.
-
Late afternoon is one of our favourite times for a Shoal Bay Beach wedding.
The harsh midday light has softened, temperatures are generally more comfortable, and the beach can take on a completely different atmosphere as the afternoon progresses.
For couples who love romantic, natural wedding photography, the period around sunset can be particularly beautiful. The soft coastal light creates flattering skin tones and gives the photographs that dreamy, warm feeling that suits a beach wedding so well.
Of course, sunset times change throughout the year, so your ceremony time should be planned around the season, your reception schedule and how much time you'd like for photographs.
-
Absolutely! This is one of the reasons we love photographing weddings around Shoal Bay.
You have the beach, clear water, sand, headland views and Mount Tomaree all within the same area. It means you don't need to spend your wedding day travelling from one photography location to another.
For couples who prefer natural and candid photographs, Shoal Bay also gives you plenty of opportunities to simply walk together, talk, laugh and enjoy the moment rather than spending your entire portrait session posing for the camera.
And if the weather isn't perfect? Don't panic. Some of the most atmospheric coastal photographs can happen when there are clouds in the sky or a little movement in the water.
-
No. A Council booking for Shoal Bay Beach is for the wedding ceremony, not a wedding reception. However, this doesn't mean you have to compromise on the beach wedding you've imagined. The area has a wonderful selection of restaurants, hotels and wedding venues nearby, so you can have your ceremony on the sand and continue the celebrations somewhere designed specifically for your reception.
-
Yes, particularly for couples who want a relaxed coastal destination wedding. Shoal Bay gives you that beautiful holiday atmosphere without requiring your guests to travel somewhere remote. Your wedding can become a whole weekend rather than simply a single day.
Guests can stay nearby, enjoy the beach, explore Port Stephens, have dinner together and spend time with you before and after the wedding.
For couples travelling from Sydney or elsewhere in Australia, it can be a wonderful way to combine a wedding with a coastal getaway.

When choosing a photographer for your Shoal Bay Beach wedding, look beyond beautiful photographs and consider experience, local knowledge and how comfortable you feel with your photographer.
Beach weddings have their own challenges! The light can change quickly, the wind can pick up, and the position of the sun, water and surrounding landscape all affect your photographs. An experienced local wedding photographer will know how to work with those conditions rather than simply hoping the weather cooperates.
As local Shoal Bay wedding photographer, we at Florent Vidal Photography knows Port Stephens extremely well. We know how beautiful the beach can be at different times of the day, where the best light falls and how to make the most of the landscape without taking you away from your guests for hours.
Most importantly, your photographer is going to be with you through some of the most personal moments of your wedding day. You want someone who makes you feel comfortable, understands how you want your wedding to feel and knows when to step in — and when to simply let the moment unfold!
