Stillborn Baby Photos: Acknowledging lost children through photographs

Only a parent knows how it truly is possible to love someone you have yet to meet.

The moment we see those two lines appear- our lives change forever. We instinctively protect our unborn children and love them with all our hearts.

It is painful to think that in Australia, everyday 6 babies will die in their mother’s womb and 1 in 5 pregnancies will end in miscarriage. I cannot pretend to comprehend the grief that comes with a loss of a child. I sincerely hope that I am writing this post with the sensitivity it deserves.

There is some comfort in knowing that these days we are talking about it much more openly. Although still not enough, we are slowly breaking through the silence. Most importantly, we are acknowledging the babies lost to miscarriage or still birth, and allowing parents and families to grieve.

Seven years ago, Andrea and Mark lost their twin boys. Recently, they booked a family portrait shoot and they wanted to celebrate their family, but also include their twin boys in a photograph through silhouettes that are age appropriate to when the children were lost.

To be honest, I wasn’t sure if I would be able to do this, as I have never created anything like it before. I knew how important this would be for them, and I wanted to make it happen.

On the day of the shoot, we had a lot of fun running around Birubi beach and getting splashed by the waves! As the sun was setting, Andrea and Mark, along with their two children jumped up and down in front of the sun. It was the picture of a family having fun! I knew then that it would be the perfect photo to include their twin boys.

It was joyful and a true reflection of their family.
