Swimsuit photoshoot in Port Stephens
Commercial Photographer Newcastle
I was recently commissioned to do a series of photographs for a swimsuit model. The location couldn’t have been more perfect in the beautiful sands of Port Stephens’ beaches.
Commercial and advertising photography is used for promotional purposes rather than preserving a memory or telling a story as in fine art photography and photojournalism. As the famous saying goes, “If you fail to prepare, prepare to fail.” Preparation is very important for a commercial shoot. One does not turn up on-site and muck around hoping for something to work. My preparation begins at scouting the location of the photoshoot. I check the best time of the day for light, which is usually very early in the morning or late afternoon.
Port Stephens was the perfect location for this shoot, as there are plenty of white sandy beaches to choose from that can rival any tropical beach in the world, and with less crowd! This gives the me and the model plenty of time to find our working rhythm without distraction.
I often get asks “What makes a good model?”
First up it’s not enough to have a beautiful face or body, when you step in front of the camera you become someone else. You become what the camera wants you to be. Your eyes have to be alive and forget who you are and become one with the camera. And that’s the difference between a good model and a great model.
A great model has to be able to show a full range of different emotions without even thinking about it. Some people have a false preconceived notion that modelling is easy, but it’s not. It’s like being a theatre actor – you have to be in touched with your emotions and not be self conscious. It is a talent to be able to work with the camera and not be consumed by it.
